Counselor’s Corner

Class of 2009

UA Fort SmithVisit

On February 6th,  the sophomore class of AHS will be touring the campus of the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. Students will be exposed to various occupational choices, as well as developing an understanding of the opportunities that await them with post high school training. Pat Widders, previous assistant principal at AHS and current director of the WATC program, has graciously provided this exciting experience for our students. Mr. Jerry Valentine and several sophomore teachers will chaperone this group. This college visit is part of our “Are you ready?” program which assists students in thinking about future career choices.

 Student Agendas

New to Alma High School last year, all students are being issued an agenda. The agenda has a calendar, a place for students to write assignments and tasks, academic tips, and a hallway passport. The agenda is being used for multiple purposes. The high school faculty hope that the agenda will improve communication and teach students time management and prioritizing skills. In addition, the agenda has a hallway passport which will be utilized as a hall pass system. Students who need to leave class will fill out the passport and carry their agenda with them at all times. this will provide an easier way of tracking students throughout the day. Each student is given one agenda. Because of the expense of the agenda, students who lose their agenda will have to purchase a replacement for $5.

Academics

Many sophomore students become overwhelmed by the responsibilities that come with the sophomore year. Even strong students struggle with balancing the new privileges and responsibilities of the sophomore year.  As students begin to drive, they often work to help pay for transportation related expenses. Both the new responsibilities and the new freedoms that come with driving, create a conflict of priorities for students. Mom and dad may stress academics, but students still need help learning how to prioritize and manage time and responsibilities. Students may need a little extra guidance and encouragement this year. Encourage your child to think about the future, as well as the impact of the sophomore year on academic opportunities.

Volunteer work

More and more scholarships awards are based on volunteer work. Scholarship committees and employers place a lot of importance on students giving up their time to help others. Most campus clubs require members to participate in volunteer activities. Be sure your child gets involved in some form of volunteer work this year!

Drivers Permits

Arkansas State law requires that students have at least a "C" average (2.00) grade point average in order to test for their driver's permit. Students who want to test for their permit need to see Mrs. Steward in the Counseling Center to get the form required by the Arkansas State Police drivers testing department.

Work Permits

As a courtesy to our students, Mrs. Steward has work permits available  in the Counseling Center. Work permits are for students who are under the age of sixteen. The student must fill out part of the work permit and their employer fills out the remainder of the form. Should your child need one, please have him or her come by to see Mrs. Steward.
