SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
H.O.T.T. (Health Occupations for Today and Tomorrow) Career Exploration Opportunity is a skills camp offered for all young men entering grades 9-12 by the University Of Arkansas Fort Smith College Of Health Sciences. The camp will be held from Monday, June 16th through Thursday, June 19th from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The cost is $15 per day or $50 for all four days. Career exploration opportunities will include Surgical Technology, Nursing, Dental Hygiene, and Radiography. Applications are available in the Counseling Center. The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department is actively promoting the summer employment of youths by contractors and material suppliers in the highway-heavy construction industry. The program represents an attempt to provide meaningful work experience and financial assistance to the state’s youths, ages 18-21. A list of local companies which participate in the program is available in the Counseling Center. Any questions relative to the work schedule and the number or types of jobs that may be available should be directed to the company. Last years workers made average hourly wages that varied from $8.58/hour to $14.80/hour.
SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
Arkansas Game & Fish Commission Conservation Scholarship is a scholarship for graduating seniors who plan to study a field of conservation (law enforcement, fisheries management, wildlife management, public relations, environmental education and interpretation, etc.). Applications are available on-line by following the instructions on the link: http://www.agfc.com/education-class/programs/conservation-scholarship-program/conservation-scholarship-program-new.aspx. Application deadline is June 10th.
The Big Sun Scholarship is a scholarship provided by the Big Sun Organization, which offers scholarships to assist young athletes to succeed in their academic pursuits. All student athletes are eligible for this award, regardless of the sport in which they participate. Numerous $500 scholarships are available. Student athletes may apply by sending a short (500 words or less) essay describing why he or she should be the winner of this award. The deadline to apply is June 20, 2008.
Abbott and Fenner Business Consultants offer an annual scholarship of $1,000 to high school seniors who have enrolled in college. To apply for this scholarship, you will need to write an essay on one of the following two topics: 1) Discuss, in less than 1,000 words, what you consider to be the single most important societal problem? Why? 2) How has your education contributed to who you are today or how will it affect who you become? In less than 1,000 words, discuss this question.
