New Rules Governing Nutrition Standards
in Arkansas Public Schools

The Arkansas Department of Education passed new rules governing nutrition standards in Arkansas Public Schools.  Please note the following rules.  We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation as we comply with state law.

Just as in the past, elementary students will not have access to vending machines.  Due to a prior commitment we have with the company, students will be able to purchase a frozen treat on Friday through the end of this school year.

bullet

Students may be given any food and/or beverage items for up to nine different school events each school year to be determined and approved by school officials.  Four of these days will be taken by holiday celebrations.  To recognize students' birthdays, teachers will schedule five dates during the school year. This will also allow us to recognize students who birthdays occur during the summer.  Parents will be notified of these dates through the classroom teachers' newsletters.  We will no longer be able to have snacks on every child's birthday due to new State Department guidelines.  We will, however, recognize students' birthdays by giving them a birthday balloon from the school.

bullet

Due to these State Department guidelines parents may not provide food/beverage items to other children at school with the exception of the nine scheduled birthday or holiday events during the school year.

bullet

These State Department guidelines do not restrict what parents may provide for their own child's lunch or snacks.

It is very important that children not be allowed to cross in front of other cars who are also unloading children.  If you park in the parking lot, then you need to walk your child over to the sidewalk.  The safety of your child is of the utmost importance to us.

Parent Pick Up:

Parent pick up is in the P.E. building. The doors will be opened at 3:15 p.m. for parents to begin arriving for the 3:20 dismissal. Please pick your children up in the P.E. building. PARENTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PICK UP THEIR CHILDREN IN THE HALLWAYS. This policy has been established to insure the safety of all of our students.

Committed to Education Foundation:

A group of Arkansas businesses and community leaders have formed the Committed to Education Foundation. The Foundation has two goals: 1) to provide positive public focus on education in Arkansas, and 2) to encourage ALL public school students to do their very best in their school work.

As an incentive, the Foundation plans to reward students in Grade 6 with computers if they meet certain criteria. The criteria for receiving a computer will be based on their performance from Grades 2-6. The criteria will include scoring at proficient or above level in mathematics and literacy on the Intermediate (Grade 6) Benchmark Exam; and satisfactory conduct grades. This is a very important year for all second graders as it marks the beginning of their opportunity to receive a free computer upon the successful completion of Grade 6.
