In the Spring of 2019 Mat was selected Arkansas' Choral Director of the Year by the Arkansas Choral Directors Association. In 1999 and 2006 Mat was selected by his peers in the West Central Choral Directors Association as "Junior High Choral Director of the Year." In the spring of 2003, his last year as band director at Clarksville, the Arkansas chapter of the American School Band Directors Association selected Mat as the Senior High "Outstanding Young Band Director of the Year" for the state of Arkansas.
Since taking over the Alma Choral Program, the junior and senior high choirs under his direction have consistently received top ratings at regional and state competitions and have been chosen "Best In Class" or "Best Overall" at the Arkansas State Choral Festival a combined 34 times. The entire Alma Choral Program boasts approximately 630 choir students district-wide and is the largest individual organization in the Alma Public School system. Mr. Whitworth's work in the Alma School District was further recognized in 2019 when he was chosen Alma High School's Teacher of the Year.
Currently serving as Immediate Past-President of the Arkansas Choral Directors Association, he has served on the board for the last 10 years--two years as president, two years as President-Elect, two years in the capacity of High School Section Chair and four years as All-State Chair. He is also a member of the American Choral Directors Association for which he served as a Performance Site Chair for the 2019 and 2017 National Conventions in Minneapolis and Kansas City. He is currently slated to be Performance Site Chair again for the upcoming 2021 ACDA National Convention in Dallas, TX.
He is a frequent choral adjudicator and clinician in many regions of his home state of Arkansas and has twice conducted the Arkansas Ambassadors of Music Choir on their European tours during the summers of 2003 and 2005. Mat resides in Alma, Arkansas with his wife, Terri, and has three children, Zach, Taylor, and Jacob. One of Mat’s greatest joys has been to be the choral music teacher for all three of his children during each of their own musical journeys.
