Message from Superintendent
As you probably already are aware, Governor Hutchinson has directed that all Arkansas Schools be closed beginning this Tuesday, March 17. This closure will end at the end of spring break, which is Sunday, March 29. It is certainly possible that the closure might be extended. That will be decided by state officials in the coming days.
The Governor also authorized each school district to decide if it would be open or closed on Monday, March 16. Alma School District will be not have class on Monday. However, there is some important information that you need to know about Monday.
On Monday, our busses will run in the morning at the regular time. They will leave school to return home at 11:30 am. Attendance is not mandatory for any student. However if a student has anything in their classroom or elsewhere in the school that they may need during the time we are closed, you are welcome to come on Monday and get it. This could be personal items, but also anything that might be needed for school work this week. This would also include picking up a Chromebook if one is needed and that was not done last Friday.
Also on Monday, all schools will be serving breakfast and lunch. Lunch will be served at 11:00 All students are invited to come to school to eat, whether or not they ride the bus. This is for Monday only.
Beginning on Tuesday, and for the remainder of this week, we will be distributing breakfasts and lunches throughout the community. These will be available at each school office and also at a number of locations throughout the district. You may pick this food up between 10:00 and 11:00. This is available to any Alma student. If you are unable to go to a location to pick up food, please contact any of these locations, perhaps the one closest to where you live, and they will probably be able to bring it to you. The list of locations is on the district web site at Almasd.net
This food availability is only for this week. We will not be able to provide food during the week of spring break.
As you know, parent-teacher conferences were scheduled for this Thursday and Friday. We will postpone them until a later date. However, report cards will be mailed later this week.
School offices will be open from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm every day this week. If you or your child need anything don’t hesitate to call us.
As directed by state officials, this closure includes all activities. There will not be any type of student activity afternoon on Monday until Monday, March 30. This includes sports teams' practices, including youth league teams.
I want to strongly emphasize that this week is a week of school. Students have assignments in every subject and will receive additional ones during the week. Grades will be taken on these assignments. Teachers will be available to students for questions and discussions of assignments through Google Classroom, Blackboard, email, or other means.
This is a new experience for all of us. Safety is our number one concern, but we also want to do everything we can to continue the education of our students. It will take all of us working together for this time to be productive for our students, while at the same time assuring their safety. Please encourage students to be attentive to their school work this week. It is important.
Thank you, and as always, contact us if we can be of help to your family in any way.
