Volleyball falls, 3-0
The Lady Airedales’ volleyball team dropped to 1-2 in the 5A-West with a 25-16, 25-20, 25-15 loss to Russellville Tuesday.
Errors and hitting struggles compounded Alma’s road loss. Rebekah McIntosh led the Lady Airedales with eight kills.
Jenna Williams and Rachel James finished with five and four, respectively. Sophomore Miranda Gipson added three kills.
James finished with a team-high 10 assists and 10 digs. Gipson added eight assists, and Williams finished with nine digs.
Alma (4-7 overall) will host Van Buren Thursday at 6 p.m.
Alma 8th graders roll
Tim Plourde and Jackson Rust combined for nearly 200 yards and three touchdowns Tuesday as the Alma eighth grade football team defeated Van Buren, 19-8.
Plourde had 121 yards and two touchdowns. Austin Davilla added 40 yards on six carries.
Rust was 6-of-7 for 75 yards and a touchdown. Randall Waggoner had three receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown. Wesley Patterson had three catches for 21 yards, and Owen McCoy added a 2-point conversion.
Plourde and Davilla led the team with three tackles apiece. Dallas Stallings, Joseph Lynn, and Waggoner added two tackles each. Waggoner recovered a fumble and Trenton Kilgore forced a fumble.
7th grade wins big
Izaac Plourde ran for 149 yards and a touchdown, and the Alma Airedales’ seventh-grade team scored 16 points in the final 1:27 of the first half for a 23-8 victory over Butterfield.
Quarterback Chase Parker threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Luke Stogsdill for the game’s first score. Daniel Rodriquez kicked three extra points and also recovered his onside kick.
After pinning Butterfield deep on its end, Colton Nutt tackled the Pointers’ Jesse Rodriguez for a safety. Then, on the final play of the half, Plourde scored to make it 16-0.
Lawson Adams threw a second-half touchdown to pass to Stogsdill.
Also, Julian Spears recovered a fumble for the winners.
The Airedales competed at the Fort Smith Invitational last weekend.
Jael Nunez, who was 32nd the week before at Shiloh Christian, placed 10th overall with a time of 18:41.9. Brayden Welch was 17th (19:48.8) and Grant Allen finished 25th (20:30.2).
Wyatt Brister and Avery Bowerman also ran hard, placing 64th and 83rd, respectively.
Elena Frantzen was 10th (15:21.4) in the junior high girls’ two-mile division. Teammate Faith Wilson placed 28th (16:51.7).
Alma will next compete at Mansfield on Sept. 25.
Logan Evans, Josh Smith, and Shivam Raja earned singles wins Tuesday in tennis action.
Evans earned an 8-2 win over Greenwood. Smith earned a 6-3 victory, and Raja won his match, 8-3.
Raja and Landon Coursey dropped a tough 8-6 decision in boy's doubles.
