Tennis team sweep

 

The Alma girls and boys tennis team defeated Greenbrier and Viloni a count of 6-3 and 6-2 Thursday.   

 

Against Vilonia, the singles duo of Logan Evans and Blake Williams earned 8-0 and 8-2 victories. The pair also won hard-fought matches over Greenbrier by scores of 8-4 and 8-5, respectively. 

 

Nathan Gibson and Drew Battles continued their mastery as well with an 8-6 and 8-4 doubles sweep of the Eagles. Gibson and Battles remained undefeated (6-0) in 5A-West play with an 8-3 win over Greenbrier. 

 

Gavin Webb and Caden Farris defeated Greenbrier, 8-5, and breezed to an 8-4 win over Vilonia. 

 

The Lady Airedales’ doubles team of Kaillie Plourde and Jenesis Davis won a hard-fought 8-6 decision over Vilonia. They also defeated Greenbrier, 8-1. 

 

Ashlyn Chronister and Ashley Fowler defeated Vilonia, 8-1, and Greenbrier, 8-6. 

 

Harriers compete 

 

Alma opened its cross country season last week, with the Nunez brothers, Jael and Martin, placing 64th and 76th, respectively, out of 161 runners in the 5K high school division. 

 

Just a sophomore, Jael Nunez finished with a time of 20:04. Martin Nunez and Hendry Dray finished with times of 20:23 and 20:26, respectively. 

 

Other members include Grant Allen, Kadie Thomas, Blake Williams and Paul Marston. 

 

Katelyn Valdez was 47th (24:40) in the girls division. Alexxis Johnston placed 77th. 

 

Heylei Moses was 64th (16:34) in the eighth grade event. Dallas Welch (ninth grader) was 24th out of 161 runners in the junior high two-mile run. 

 

Alma will run this weekend at Ben Geren. 

 

Three in a row 

 

The Alma Lady Airedales overcame some 2019 demons with a dramatic 3-2 ( ) win over Siloam Springs in the team’s 5A-West opener. 

 

Alma, which dropped a 3-2 decision to Siloam last season, extended its winning streak to three while improving to 1-0 in conference play. 

 

Lydia Swarnes had 35 digs in the team’s victory. Senior Lillie Warnock had 16 kills in the victory. 

 

Alma will host Mansfield and Russellville Monday and Tuesday, respectively. Coach Kim Weaver said the team will make-up its match with Vilonia on Oct. 5. 

 

Chambers cards 74 

 

Alma junior Blaine Chambers shot a personal best 74 this week at Ben Geren golf course. The Airedales’ golfer Tyson Shepherd shot 101 at Ben Geren. 

 

Haley Jackson shot 101 as the lone member of the Lady Airedales’ team. 

 

Alma travels to Cabot Tuesday to battle Beebe at Greystone Country Club. Alma will host Siloam Springs Thursday at River Valley Golf Course.
