The Alma Airedales hope to ride a wave of second half momentum into today's 5A-West conference opener with the Pea Ridge Blackhawks.
Alma (1-2) rallied to beat Rogers Heritage last week in overtime.
"No. 1, it's to just build off that win," Alma coach Rusty Bush said. "Our kids got some confidence coming out of that."
Senior running back Logan Chronister scored his first touchdown of the season and topped 100 yards rushing for the second straight week.
"Offensively, we have to continue to play better," Bush said. "We've got to build some consistency."
Bush wants the Airedales to be better on third down. Through three games, the Airedales are converting third downs just 24 percent of the time.
"We've gotta be upwards of 66 percent or higher on third down," Bush said. "Last week, on third down, we had three penalties and five incompletions. When it's third-and-five and third-and-six, we've got to learn to convert that."
Bush said the Airedales worked this week on third-down situations. "We worked some on third-and-five, some on third-and-eight, and some on third-and-12," he said.
After allowing 28 points off turnovers in the team's loss to Poteau on Sept. 18, Alma was guilty of just one miscue last week, which also led to a War Eagles' touchdown.
"We have lofty goals, but you're going to turn the football over — that's just going to happen," Bush said. "You're going to be on a short field and it's your job to come out and make a stop defensively. Defensively, we played pretty good at times, but we had too many missed tackles."
