Airedales fall in home opener, 60-37
By Kevin Taylor
Alma basketball coach Stan Flenor's not ready to wave the white flag. Not after one home game.
Bentonville West used a couple of strong first half runs to distance themselves from the Airedales en route to a 60-37 victory at Charles B. Dyer Arena.
"It's always exciting to come play your first home opener," Flenor said. "(But) we're a young basketball team; we're putting guys on the floor that are a little inexperienced. We're just trying to feel our way and guide us to what our strengths are. We have to improve on things."
Alma beat Pea Ridge last week by making just two 3-pointers. They were just 2-of-15 in Tuesday's loss. They were only 3-of-11 from the foul line.
"Our task is to get better, and that's what we talked about (after the game)," Flenor said. "We'll get better at the little things, and obviously we'll get into better basketball shape and we'll shoot the ball better, too."
Alma will host Southside Friday and Mena Monday.
Senior Nathan Whalen, who missed the team's season opener, scored 18 points to lead the way.
Logan Taylor and Hunter McAlister added seven and six points, respectively.
Riley Buccino led West (4-3) with a game-high 20 points.

GIRLS — The Lady Airedales held their own with Bentonville West for eight minutes Tuesday night.
They were right with the Lady Wolverines for much of the fourth quarter, too.
But what happened during the final six minutes of the second and third quarters that doomed the Lady Airedales for the second straight game.
Bentonville West senior Ivy Johnson scored 12 points off the bench, including eight in the second half, to pace the team to a 56-38 victory at Charles B. Dyer Arena. Teammate Madison Phillips scored eight of her 11 points during an 11-0 run to close the first half.
Tied at 19 after two Chloe Trusty baskets, West built a 30-19 lead.
In the third quarter, following Kenzie Rushing's 3-pointer, West ended the quarter with a 9-0 run for a 39-24 advantage.
Senior Loryn Kelley led Alma with 12 points. Teammate Presli Taylor finished with 10.
