- Alma School District
By Kevin Taylor
Alma coach Stan Flenor could hardly get the words out following Tuesday's hard-luck loss to Van Buren.
The veteran Alma coach watched Van Buren's Avery Salisbury drain a running 3-point shot from halfcourt that propelled the Pointers to a stunning 48-47 victory at Airedale Arena.
The Airedales, the No. 8 seed, travel to Greenwood Friday to face the Bulldogs in the first round of the District 5A-West Tournament. The game will begin at 6 p.m.
Alma will lug a nine-game losing streak into Friday's game. If they win, they'll move on to face Siloam Springs Monday in the second round of the district tournament.
The Lady Airedales travel to Greenbrier Friday to face the Lady Panthers at 6 p.m.
Flenor's crew would have to win twice in order to clinch a berth in the state tournament.
Trailing 45-41 with 37 seconds left to play, senior Jacob Coursey swished his fourth 3-pointer of the game to pull Alma within one with 24.6 left to play.
After forcing Van Buren into a turnover, then burning its last timeout, the Airedales' Drew Battles connected from the far corner pocket for a 3-pointer with 4.6 left in the game.
Van Buren immediately called time, and when officials sorted through the confusion, after the clock originally stopped at 3.1, officials put 4.6 on the clock, which allowed Salisbury time enough to hit his go-ahead 3-pointer.
Greenwood (9-13, 5-7) has dropped three of its last four games, including the season finale to Siloam Springs.
Lady Airedales on road
The Alma Lady Airedales dropped their season finale to Van Buren in overtime Tuesday night, 51-47. They travel to Greenbrier Friday at 6 p.m. to face the Lady Panthers.
Greenbrier defeated the Lady Airedales, 59-38, back on Jan. 29. The Lady Panthers earned the No. 5 seed overall with a 4-8 conference mark.
Alma finished the season with one conference victory and a 7-16 overall mark.
