Martin, Perry power Alma sweep- 04/07/2021
Taelynn Perry and Makinize Erwin had three hits to back Makenzie Martin’s three-hit effort in the first game of Alma’s doubleheader sweep of Russellville on Tuesday.
Alma (12-7, 5-3) scored four times in the first and eight runs in the second on its way to a 16-1 thrashing of the Lady Cyclones (2-16, 0-8) in the nightcap of Tuesday’s twinbill.
Martin, 7-4, lowered her earned run average to 2.11 while winning both games.
Bailey Webb drove in four runs in the opener of the Lady Airedales’ sweep. Alma travels to Van Buren (4-13, 2-6) Tuesday.
Freshman Julia Nutt drove in a career-high two runs in Alma’s 16-1 win over Russellville.
Abigail Smith had three hits and scored in two runs in the Lady Airedales’ 10-0 win over the Cyclones. Perry and Julia Nutt drove in two runs apiece.
Smith, Kelsey Shepherd, and Kylie Chau scored three runs apiece in the team’s 16-1 victory in the opener.
Perry leads the team with 34 hits and a .567 batting average. Four other hitters - Martin, Erwin, Webb, and Jocelyn Harless - are hitting over .400 for the season.
The Lady Airedales host Pottsville on Thursday.
The Alma Airedales seemed to be one big hit away Tuesday night.
Russellville’s Ty Hipps wiggled in and out of trouble for much of the afternoon before holding on for a 4-3 win in the opener of the team’s 5A-West doubleheader.
Russellville (12-6, 6-2) won the second game, 4-0.
Alma (5-13, 2-6) left the bases loaded in the first and third innings. Zach Holt’s two-run double sparked a three-run fifth for the Airedales.
Junior left-hander Logan Taylor allowed four runs (three earned) over six and a third innings while suffering his second straight loss. He is 2-2 overall with a 2.36 earned run average.
The Airedales (5-13) travel to Prairie Grove Friday for a non-conference game. Alma resumes 5A-West play Tuesday at Van Buren.
Sophomore lefty Noah Likens pitched well in the Airedales’ 4-0 loss in the nightcap, allowing just three earned runs.
Holt, the team’s right fielder, and center fielder Ledger Anderson supplied great defense in the loss.
The Lady Airedales and Airedales dropped a pair of 5A-West matches to Greenwood Tuesday.
The Airedales (2-7-1, 1-5) lost their fifth straight by a count of 3-0. Greenwood held Alma to just four shots on goal.
Alma keeper Johnathan Pulido had one save and two blocks. Sophomore midfielder Caleb Ferguson played well in the loss.
The Lady Airedales (0-8-1, 0-6-1) suffered a 2-1 loss to Greenwood. Sophomore Presli Taylor added a goal for the Lady Airedales in the third minute of the game. Alma was held to just three shots on goal.
Senior Sidney Hatley had four saves.
Alma travels to Mountain Home Friday.
