Volleyball falls at home
One step forward, one step back.
Alma blew an early chance to put Mountain Home away in the second game of Tuesday’s 5A-West bout. Then the Lady Airedales were unable to hold an 11-4 lead in the fourth set as the Lady Bombers rallied for a 28-30, 26-24, 25-18, 25-21 victory at Charles B. Dyer Arena.
Senior Rebekah McIntosh led the way with a season-high 15 kills.
The Lady Airedales, who lost a 16-12 lead in the second set, rallied for a 23-22 lead in the second set before falling 26-24.
“That’s the difference today; we weren’t able to press the gas when we had a lead,” Alma volleyball coach Kimberly Weaver said. “It wasn’t necessarily things Mountain Home was doing, but it was our own errors. That’s something we talk a lot about. That’s an area we’ve got to improve on as we start the second round.”
Alma (2-5) finished the first half of conference play tied with Vilonia for sixth place. The two teams play Thursday.
Alma will then travel to Siloam Springs before hosting Russellville on Oct. 7.
Mia Nichols added eight kills for the Lady Airedales. Samantha Crook finished with six kills, and Rachel James had four kills, 20 assists, and 18 digs.
Laila Boyd, Julia Nutt, and Kylie Chau played well defensively for the Lady Airedales, with Boyd leading the way with 27 digs.
Nutt and Chau had 19 and 17, respectively.
Landon Ross raced 101 yards with an interception for a touchdown Tuesday to give the Alma eighth-graders a 21-0 victory over Pea Ridge.
Leading 7-0, with Pea Ridge facing fourth and goal from the Alma 6, Ross’s big play flipped the game — and the score — in the Airedales’ win.
The Airedales’ secured the victory with a number of big defensive plays. Trenton Kilgore forced a fumble and Joey Lynn had a fumble recovery and two tackles. Austin Davilla and Randall Waggoner led the charge with five and four tackles, respectively.
Timothy Plourde had three stops, and William Sorrels, Brayden Peppas, and Russell Waggoner added two stops apiece.
Plourde led the offensive charge with 112 yards rushing and a touchdown. Davilla finished with 52 yards rushing and a touchdown. Quarterback Jackson Rust added 17 yards passing.
Seventh-grader Daniel Rodriguez kicked three extra points for the eighth graders. He also was 3-for-3 in Alma’s seventh-grade game.
