The Alma Lady Airedales were still on the clock as of Tuesday night. For second-year coach Kimberly Weaver, that says something.
Greenwood eked out a 25-23 win over Alma in Game 1 and then rolled to a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-18, 25-12) at Charles B. Dyer Arena to set up a big 5A-West showdown with 13-0 Greenbrier Friday.
Alma (4-9) was officially eliminated from postseason play Tuesday.
“I think we’re still trying to prove to ourselves what we’re capable of,” Weaver said. “We have a fan base that really believes in us, and as a coaching staff, we really know what this team is capable of. But the girls are still trying to prove to themselves that they belong in the conversation.”
Mia Nichols and Jenna Williams led Alma with four kills apiece in Tuesday’s loss. Rachel James had nine assists and three kills. Julia Nutt contributed four assists.
Jocelyn Harless and Williams finished with 17 and 16 digs, respectively.
Alma bid farewell to three seniors in Tuesday’s home finale, including Rebekah McIntosh and Kristen Lindley.
The bulk of the roster will be back in 2022.
Weaver says the team still has something to play for.
“Absolutely,” she said. “We want to go to Mountain Home and play well. We want to carry that experience into the off-season.”
