Alma used a suffocating defense to power past Shiloh Christian Monday at the Turkey Shoot Tournament at Lincoln High School.

Alma (2-1) will play Kingston (3-5) in the finals today at 5:15 p.m.

The Lady Airedales trailed Shiloh Christian, 32-11 late in the first half before coming to life in the final sixteen minutes. Alma used tenacious defense and clutch shooting to post its second straight victory, the team’s first back-to-back streak since Dec. 29-30 of 2020 when the Lady Airedales beat Lamar and Dardanelle on back-to-back nights.

“We haven’t shot it particularly well all year long,” Alma coach Codey Mann said. “The thing I was most proud of is how they’re just becoming a team. They cheer for each other, they want to win, and that will take you a long way.”

Mann’s daughter, Lydia, hit a layup in the closing seconds of the first half to pull the Lady Airedales within 10 (23-13).

Down 25-15, Alma took control with a 14-0 scoring run in the third quarter that included a trio of Mann baskets and two big 3-pointers from Presli Taylor and Hayln Carmack.

Mann put Alma ahead for good (27-25) with two foul shots at the 2:26 mark of the third quarter.

Mann opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and two baskets by Lanie Moore and Jordan Gramlich hit back-to-back buckets in the span of 23 seconds to extend Alma’s lead to 29-23 with 3:06 remaining.

Mann led all scorers with 11 points, but Rushing, Taylor, and Gramlich finished with eight apiece.

“That was a thrill for me because we have struggled a lot with confidence,” Rushing said. “Last year, we wouldn’t have won that game being down by 10 at halftime. But instead, we came out with a different mindset.”

Hunter McAlister and Daniel Howard finished with nine and eight, respectively.

Alma led 18-8 after one quarter and 29-15 at the half.
