Lady Airedales blast Waldron, 15-0
By Kevin Taylor
Not even a brisk breeze could keep Makenzie Martin from adding to her career home run numbers Monday.
Martin lined a two-run homer as part of a six-run second inning and the Lady Airedales shut out Waldron, 15-0, for their fourth victory in six games.
Martin, who went two innings for the victory, was 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Alma has outscored its first six opponents, 48-22.
“It was a hard wind, and the slow pitch threw me off a little,” Martin said. “I had to wait on it. I knew if I just stayed back and drove it, it was going to be good.”
Alma freshmen Kaytlin Willis and twins Jordan and Jaden Gramlich combined for five of the Lady Airedales’ 15 hits in just three-plus innings. Senior standout Taelynn Perry went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Perry’s RBI double put the Lady Airedales ahead 1-0, and sophomore Julia Nutt followed with a run-scoring single. Nutt added an RBI single in the third inning as well.
Up 2-0 after one, Alma pounced on the Lady Bulldogs in the second inning. Jada Wallis reached on an error to open the inning. Jocelyn Harless singled and Wallis scored on a fielder’s choice.
Makinize Erwin walked and scored on Jordan Gramlich’s RBI single. Martin then followed with a two-run homer to left field — the 28th round-tripper of her career and fourth this season in six games.
“She hit that one on the nose and lined it out there,” Alma coach Charla Parrish said. “She’s really developed herself into an outstanding softball player — pitcher, hitter … and playing her some at second, too.
“She’s stepped up and has become a really good softball player.”
The Lady Airedales (4-2, 1-1) resume 5A-West play Tuesday against Siloam Springs.
“This team’s been working really hard to get to where we’re at, especially with an important player quitting recently and having to move some players around,” Martin said. “I thought we really played well today.”
