Welch, McIntosh excel at Panther Relays


Alma sophomore Brayden Welch won both the 800 and 1600 meter races at last week's Panther Relays in Siloam Springs. Welch took first in the 800 with a time of 2:09.72. He won the 1600 meters with a time of 4:46.80. 


Teammate Jael Nunez was second (2:12.73) in the 800 and fourth (4:54.47) in the 1600. 


Sophomore Japheth Barnhill was second in the 110 high hurdles (18.14) and second in the 300 hurdles (47.26). 


In the boys’ 100 meters, Alma senior Justice Lincks was fourth (11.57). Teammate Braxton Kilgore was eighth. 


The Airedales’ Shawn Rankins placed seventh in the 400. 


Nathan Smith and Jacob Moore placed third (38-1) and fourth (38-1), respectively, in the shot put. Alma senior Levi Burkhart was eighth in the shot put and discus. 


Alma did well in the relays, too. The 4x100 was second (45.99) and the 4x400 relay squad placed second with a time of 3:44.43. The 4x200 relay team placed sixth. 


Alma senior Rebekah McIntosh won the high jump (4-8) and placed third (19.14) in the 100 hurdles. Makia Cravey took third (13.55) in the 100 meters and fourth (28.65) in the 200, respectively. 


The Lady Airedales’ Alexxis Johnston was eighth in the 400. 


Alma’s 4x100 relay team was third (55.38) and the 4x200 relay placed fourth (2:13.16). 




The Airedales baseball team beat Lavaca 6-2 on Friday for its seventh victory of the season. Senior Chandler O’Kelley went five innings, allowing three hits and one run, for his first victory of the season. 


Branson Brogan had three hits and an RBI for the Airedales. Tyson Shepherd’s one-out RBI single tied the game in the third. Alma added two more runs in the fourth and scored three times in the sixth. 


Freshman Shepperd Osborn had a career-high two hits to raise his batting average to .429. Jacob Fraley and Nathan Machen also hit safely for the winners. 


Lane Gates worked the final two innings, striking out four and allowing an unearned run. 


Alma resumes the 5A-West play Tuesday at Russellville. 




Makenzie Martin and Taelynn Perry blasted three-run homers and the Lady Airedales’ softball team held on for a 7-5 win over Mena on Friday. 


Martin (7-1) was the winning pitcher. Perry’s second homer of the season, a one-out three-run shot, put Alma up 3-0 after one inning of play. 


Martin’s seventh homer of the season, a one-out three-run homer in the third, extended the lead to 6-1 in the third. Martin, Perry, and freshman Jordan Gramlich had two hits each. 


The Lady Airedales face Russellville on Tuesday in a 5A-West play.
