Welch getting close to 1600 record; McIntosh solid third in 300 hurdles

Brayden Welch ran well on Thursday at the McDonald Relays. Rebekah McIntosh did her best in the 100 intermediate hurdles and high jump as well.
But the Airedales, as a whole, suffered a particularly tough day, with Conner Stacy pulling up during the 300 hurdles and failing to place in the high jump. Sophomore Ian Rhoads also pulled up during the 100 meters.
McIntosh jumped 4-10 (fourth place) in the high jump but was unable to reach 5-0. She ran a sparkling time of 17.30 in the 100 hurdles, narrowly finishing second to Gravette’s Belen Nelson (17.29).
McIntosh was ninth in the triple jump.
Welch will get another crack at the school record on Tuesday when Alma competes in the 5A-West Conference meet in Siloam Springs.
“It was windy and humid,” he said of Thursday’s event. “It was kind of hard to breathe when I got to my third lap. It was humid and I got a little dehydrated.”
He’s hopeful for better results on Tuesday.
“I PR’d but I was really aiming for the record,” Welch said. “I just have to work on it. I feel like I should be able to get that at a conference or state.”
Makenzie Martin had two more hits to give her 38 for the season and the Alma Lady Airedales celebrated Senior Day with a 9-1 win over Paris on Thursday.
Martin reached base three times and scored twice while raising her batting average to .585.
Martin also earned the victory, a one-hit complete game with eight strikeouts and no walks. She raised her overall record to 11-2 and lowered her earned run average to 2.81.
Martin went 14-6 in 2021. And, in addition to her 38 hits this season, now has 77 hits over the last two seasons.
Jordan Gramlich had two hits in Thursday's victory, giving her 25 for the season. The standout freshman is batting .342 for the season.
She had three hits in last week's doubleheader sweep of Greenbrier. In addition to holding her own at the plate, Gramlich also has three of Alma's 14 pitching victories.
Sophomore Jada Wallis had two more hits to raise her season average to .394. Wallis doubled home two runs as part of a four-run third.
Alma resumes 5A-West play Tuesday with a key doubleheader at Greenwood.
