Alma junior high football coach Derrick Haney was pleased with his team’s effort this week in Tuesday’s scrimmage with Ozark.

“I am really proud of how hard we played during the scrimmage,” Haney said. “Our kids were excited to get to play against someone besides our own teammates.”

Tim Plourde played well. “(Plourde) picked up where he left off from last year and Sam Schlegel makes a great addition to our team.”

Logan English is expected to have a big season. “Our offensive line did really well and opened several holes for our run game,” Haney said.

Haney said he expects Izaac Plourde and Logan Flanagan to run the football. Dylan Jackson and Hudson Loughridge are expected to play well, too.

“Dylan Jackson and Hudson Loughridge are going to be great players for us no matter where you put them,” he said. “Our defensive line with the eighth grade is really physical and played in the backfield most of the game. Daniel Rodriguez will be a great difference on special teams with his kicking abilities.”

The Airedales eighth and ninth-grade teams open the season on Aug. 25 at Morrilton.

Alma competed with Siloam Springs in a dual match Thursday.

Miles Kendrick led the Airedales with an 85. Piercen Howell and Matthew Rodgers both shot 90 and 95, respectively. Byron Strandridge fired a 111.

Presli Taylor led the Lady Airedales with an 85. Taylor also competes in soccer and basketball.

Marlee Cedillo shot a 106 for the Lady Airedales.

Alma will compete with Northside in a dual match with Northside.

The Alma Airedales open the 2022 season Tuesday against Van Buren. It will mark the 76th time the schools have met.

The Pointers won last year’s game, 31-20.

Alma will face Siloam Springs and Pryor, Okla. in nonconference play before opening the 5A-West play on Sept. 23 against Clarksville.

The Alma Lady Airedales open the 2022 season Monday with a quick trip to Charleston before returning home Thursday to play Pottsville in the team’s home opener.

Alma split a pair of matches with Huntsville (1-1) and Springdale (2-0) this week at Huntsville.

Coach Kim Weaver and the Lady Airedales will close out August with the Lady Airedale Invitational on Aug. 27.

The Alma Airedales’ tennis team will host Van Buren and Mountain Home in a tri-match Tuesday at the Toney McMurray Courts.

The Airedales host Pottsville Thursday.
