Alma’s Evans earns another win
Alma senior Logan Evans defeated Greenwood, Alex Schafer Thursday, 8-4, to wrap up a busy week of 5A-West tennis.
Alma’s No. 1 singles player also helped Josh Smith roll to a 6-1 win over Greenwood’s Wesley Jarrell and Eason Lin in the No. 3 doubles play.
The Airedales’ No. 2 singles player, Jeremiah Schlegel, grinded out an 8-8 (7-1 tiebreaker) over Keaton Whisenhunt.
Alma’s No. 3 singles player, Layne Goins, earned a 6-0 win over Conner Jones.
Alma’s top doubles team of Jackson McMurray and Caden Farris dropped their doubles match, 8-2.
Alma’s junior high and eighth-grade volleyball teams recorded wins over Springdale George Junior High on Thursday at Crabtree Gym.
For Ala, Breella Hughes had five kills, an ace, one block, and one dig. Emberly Kimes finished with three kills and two digs, and Chloe Gregory had two assists, two digs, one kill, a block, and one ace.
Also for Alma, Matilyn Dunn finished with a team-high nine assists and three digs. Annabella Davis led with nine digs and an ace, and Kyran Kious finished with one kill, three digs, and a pair of aces.
McKinzy Berna and Leila Householder finished with two aces and one kill and one dig, respectively.
Earlier this week, Alma (4-5) defeated Greenwood in junior high action. Gregory had two aces, three assists, and a kill. Hughes added two aces, one block, and one dig. Annabelle Davis had three aces and three digs.
Kimes, Dunn, and Anna Swarnes (all eighth graders) combined for 10 digs, three kills, and two assists.
Alma’s senior high squad dropped a 3-0 decision (25-10, 25-10, 25-20) to Van Buren, to fall to 1-3 in 5A-West play.
The Alma Airedales’ junior high team suffered a 21-12 loss to Van Buren on Monday.
Sam Schlegel led the offense with 107 yards rushing on 12 carries. He scored both of the team’s touchdowns.
Schlegel finished with seven tackles on defense.
Also, Tim Plourde had five tackles and a quarterback sack. Trenton Kilgore finished with four tackles and a fumble recovery. Dallas Stallings added two tackles, including a sack and a fumble recovery.
Kilgore, Stallings, and Chase Parker all forced a fumble.
Alma’s seventh grade played Van Buren Northridge on Thursday.
Quinton Broadway led the charge with 54 yards rushing and a touchdown. Barron Daily rushed for 12 yards and led the defense with seven tackles. Dallas Perkins finished with five tackles. Mason Mahar finished with four tackles.
Broadway, Tristan Rhodes, Brison Vasquez, Trenton Simon, and Caleb Schlegel had two stops apiece.
