5A-West Conference Meet, Schlegel wins 300 hurdles

Alma sophomore Samuel Schlegel won the 300 intermediate hurdles event at the 5A-West conference meet Wednesday at the Tom McMurray track. 

Schlegel, who finished second a week earlier at the McDonald’s Relays, took first place with a blazing time of 40.94. Teammate John Crump was second (42.41). 

Crump was third (15.60) in the 110 hurdles. Schlegel was fourth. Freshman Dylan Jackson finished sixth in the 110 hurdles.

Jackson Mitchell was seventh in the shot put and Crump landed an eighth-place finish in the high jump. 

Byron Standridge and Ayden Parker finished fourth and sixth in the 200 and 400 meters. 

Standridge, Schlegel, Parker, and Landon Morris finished second (3:34.62) in the 4x400 relay event. 

Also, Standridge, Morris, Parker, and Mitchell finished fourth (1:33.96) in the 800 relay. Schlegel, Crump, Morris, and Standridge placed fifth in the 400-meter relay. 

Alma’s Nevaeh Kangas placed third (5:44.27) in the 1600 meters. She was sixth in the 800. 

Also for the Lady Airedales, Kenadie Farris was seventh in the high jump. Vivian Beneux was seventh in the 100 meters. 

Yoseline Gonzalez finished eighth in the 300 intermediate hurdles. 

SOCCER 

The Alma Lady Airedales soccer team earned a 2-2 tie with Van Buren this week. 

Goalkeepers Alexis Rayburn and Vivian Beneux combined for four saves. Alma had 20 shots on goal, with 11 targets. 

Down 2-0, Lexi Julian pulled Alma within one in the 44th minute with a strike just in the 18-yard box. 

Yoseline Gonzalez tied the match in the 67th minute on a nice breakaway pass from Julian. 

Alma lost the boys match, 4-0. Keeper Eddie Tate had 20 saves.
