ENGLISH 9/GRADE 9: 1 CREDIT - 410000

English 9 is a course covering examples of the different kinds of literature including units on drama, poetry, and short stories. This is combined with the teaching of the writing process and a brief review of basic grammar rules. A research paper, formal essays, and creative writings are required.

HONORS ENGLISH 9/GRADE 9: 1 CREDIT HONORS 4.5 - 410001

Honors English 9 is a combined course of grammar, writing, and literature with emphasis on using the writing process. A research paper, formal essays, and creative writings are required. Literature includes drama, poetry, short stories, nonfiction, and novels. Independent reading of material outside of the required curriculum is required.

ENGLISH W/ PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION 10/GRADE 10: 1.5 CREDITS - 411000

English 10 with Professional Communication will integrate the frameworks for English 10 and frameworks for Professional Communication, which meet the state’s oral communication requirement. Students will receive 1.5 credits for this course. The study of English is a combined curriculum of grammar, writing, and literature. Grammar and vocabulary will be developed through extensive and varied reading, a variety of writing assignments (including, but not limited to compositions and a research project) and frequent cooperative learning opportunities. Independent reading outside of the classroom curriculum is required. In this course, students will also learn effective communication skills that can be used in a variety of settings. This is a digital learning course and forty percent of time will be spent utilizing the Internet for research and development of speeches and English projects.

Independent reading outside of the classroom is required. In this course, students will also learn effective communication skills that can be used in a variety of settings. This is a digital learning course and forty percent of time will be spent utilizing the Internet for research and development of speeches and English projects.

ENGLISH 11/GRADE 11: 1 CREDIT - 412000

English 11 is a combination of American literature, grammar, and writing. Consistent skills are needed in writing and reading. Grammar is reviewed as errors occur in writing and through writing assignments. ACT preparation is practiced throughout the year. Independent reading and writing and a research paper are required.

HONORS ENGLISH 11/GRADE 11: 1.0 CREDIT HONORS 4.5 - 412001

Honors English 11 is an accelerated course combining American literature, grammar, and writing. Strong reading comprehension and writing skills are expected, as well as vocabulary and communication competency for critical analysis. Because students who choose this course are traditionally college-bound, intense focus on ACT preparation is a focus throughout the year. Independent reading and writing are a regular requirement. A research paper or annotated bibliography using MLA format is also required during this course.

ENGLISH 12/GRADE 12: 1 CREDIT - 413000

English 12 combines British literature and writing instruction designed to aid students who need help mastering grammar and mechanics skills, and who need instruction in writing more effectively. The course includes a research paper and a final portfolio.

COLLEGE READY ENGLISH 12/GRADE 12: 1 CREDIT - 413010

This course is designed to accelerate students’ literacy skills essential for college and career readiness. Students will receive instruction in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The course will also emphasize literacy and use informational texts from diverse genres in print and digital formats. This course is for seniors who have not yet scored a 19 on the English or Reading portions of the ACT.

AP LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION GRADES 11-12: 1 CREDIT HONORS 5.0 - 517030

AP Language and Composition is a course that emphasizes the reading, appreciation, and understanding of non-fiction texts and American literature. Students work toward advanced skills in reading, usage, and vocabulary in relation to rhetorical, argument, and synthesis composition skills. This is a college level course and students will take the AP Language Exam at the end of the course. This course counts for the junior or senior English credit.

CONCURRENT COMPOSITION I/II GRADE 12: 2 CREDITS HONORS 4.5 - 519940

Composition I/Composition II is a concurrent course through Arkansas Tech University. The course can earn students six hours of college credit upon completion. Composition I includes a review of grammar and introductions to research methods, and practice in writing exposition using reading to provide ideas and patterns. Composition II is a continuation of Composition I with readings in poetry, fiction, and drama. Students who sign up for this course must complete both semesters to replace their English 12 course. Students must have an ACT score of 19 or above in Reading AND English in order to be eligible for this course.

ORAL COMMUNICATIONS COURSE: 1/2 UNIT REQUIRED (INTEGRATED IN TO ENGLISH 10)

PERSONAL COMMUNICATION/GRADES 11-12: 0.5 CREDIT - 414200

Personal Communication is a semester course for juniors and seniors who have not yet taken Oral Communication. In this course students will learn effective communication skills that can be used in a variety of settings. It will provide students with an understanding of the dynamics of effective communication while speaking, listening, and responding. Course topics will include social media usage, communication barriers, the role of media, and conflict resolution. Students will deliver formal and informal speeches. Personal Communication is a digital learning course and forty percent of time will be spent utilizing the Internet for research and development of speeches. This course is required for graduation.

PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION/GRADES 11-12: 0.5 CREDIT - 414210

Professional Communication will provide students with an understanding of the dynamics of effective communication while speaking, listening, and responding in the situations they will encounter in career settings. Students will practice the principles of communication competencies in professional settings, demonstrate the effect of intrapersonal and interpersonal communication of professional relationships, participate in collaborative communication activities that mirror the contemporary workplace, and deliver a variety of informal talks and addresses relevant to the business world.
