SCIENCE COURSES: 3 UNITS REQUIRED INCLUDING PHYSICAL SCIENCE AND BIOLOGY
PHYSICAL SCIENCE INTEGRATED/GRADE 9: 1 CREDIT - 423000 | Physical science provides a basic conceptual understanding of foundational science core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. The course integrates physical science, Earth and space science, life science, and engineering design. Topics covered include elements, matter, force, motion, energy, waves, and interactions of humans and the environment among other scientific ideas. |
HONORS PHYSICAL SCIENCE INTEGRATED/GRADE 9: 1 CREDIT HONORS 4.5 - 423001 | Honors Physical Science is an advanced introductory course integrating physical science, earth and space science, life science, and engineering design. Students will get a conceptual understanding of foundational science core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. A more in-depth study of elements, matter, force, motion, energy, waves, and interaction of humans and the environment will be provided compared to the survey course. Participation in Science Fair is required. |
BIOLOGY INTEGRATED/GRADE 10: 1 CREDIT - 420000 | Biology provides a basic conceptual understanding of foundational life and earth science core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. It is an integration of life science, earth and space science, and engineering design standards. Students will spend time viewing and classifying a variety of life forms, collect and analyze data, and will practice the safe use of laboratory equipment. |
HONORS BIOLOGY INTEGRATED/GRADE 10: 1 CREDIT HONORS 4.5 - 420001 | Honors Biology is an in-depth study of integrated life science, earth and space science, and engineering design concepts. Students will learn concepts necessary for the college preparatory curriculum. Participation in Science Fair is required. Students should have taken Honors Physical Science or have teacher recommendation in order to take this course. |
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE/GRADES 11-12: 1 CREDIT - 424020 | This course offers an overview of topics needed to understand the environmental issues and challenges of today’s world. Issues including global warming, population growth and food production, resource depletion, deforestation, ground and water quality, biomes, habitat destruction, alternative energy sources, and pollution are just a few of the topics to be discussed. This class will focus on real-life issues that we will be facing in our lifetime. This course is full of experiments, projects, and hands-on learning. Students who choose this course as their third science requirement WILL NOT graduate Smart Core. |
CHEMISTRY INTEGRATED/GRADES 11-12: 1 CREDIT - 421000 | Chemistry offers a conceptual understanding of foundational chemistry and physics core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. The curriculum integrates chemistry, physics, earth and space science, and engineering design. Students will be expected to use laboratory equipment, suitable mathematics, and collect and analyze data. Hands-on experiences and lab safety are highly emphasized. |
HONORS CHEMISTRY INTEGRATED/GRADE 11: 1 CREDIT HONORS 4.5 - 421001 | Honors Chemistry is a rigorous college-prep class that covers many of the same topics and lab work as the survey Chemistry course, but in greater depth, pace, and difficulty. This class has the goals of preparing students for AP Chemistry, college, and future STEM careers. Special emphasis is placed on a rigorous mathematical examination of chemical principles. Participation in Science Fair is required. |
PHYSICS/GRADES 11-12: 1 CREDIT - 422010 | Physics includes study in the areas of Newtonian mechanics, thermodynamics, optics, electricity and magnetism. It will provide a basic knowledge needed for many college programs. Students should expect to collect data in the laboratory and analyze it. This course requires the use of higher level mathematics skills, including Geometry. Students should have at least completed Geometry to take this course. |
