DANCE COURSES

DANCE APPRECIATION/GRADES 9-12: 0/5 CREDIT (453300)

Dance Appreciation is a Fine Arts credit. This beginning class is a one semester course and open to all students without prior dance experience. It is focused on building strength, flexibility, and self- discipline while learning the basic technical principles of ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, and ballroom dance. This class is a pre-requisite for all other Dance classes at AHS.

BEGINNING DANCE/GRADES 9-12: 1 CREDIT (45920B)

Beginning Dance is a beginning class that is an extension of the technical elements implemented in previous dance courses. This course will focus on continuing skill understanding and development, will participate in the Dance Show in the spring, and may have additional performance opportunities throughout the year. Students will be placed in this class based upon their performance and participation in previous dance classes. Teacher approval by Coach Murray or Coach Hill is required.

INTERMEDIATE DANCE/GRADES 9-12: 1 CREDIT (459201)

Intermediate Dance is an intermediate-level class and students should have a good understanding of basic dance technique and will start working on more advanced skills and combinations. Intermediate Dance will participate in the Dance Show in the spring and may have additional performance opportunities throughout the year. Students will be placed in this class based on their performance and participation in previous dance classes. Teacher approval by Coach Murray or Coach Hill is required.

ADVANCED DANCE/GRADES 9-12: 1 CREDIT (45920D)

Advanced Dance is an advanced- level class that should contain only students who have mastered basic technical skills and are capable of learning detailed choreography and advanced skills in a fast-paced environment. Advanced Dance will participate in the Dance Show in the spring and will have additional performance opportunities throughout the year. Students will be placed in this class based upon their performance and participation in previous dance classes. Teacher approval by Coach Murray or Coach Hill is required.

DRAMA COURSES

ACTING/GRADES 10-12: 0.5 CREDIT (45910T)

Acting is a semester class where students acquire skills in script analysis, character development, vocal techniques, and communication of the script. Students will address and solve theatrical problems through their own background knowledge, learned techniques, and improvisation skills. The reading and reviewing of dramatic literature is also a requirement for this class. Students must have taken AMS Advanced Drama or AHS Theatre Appreciation before taking this class.

ADVANCED ACTING/GRADES 10-12: 1 CREDIT (45911T)

Advanced Acting is a yearlong acting course that allows students an opportunity to continue to build their skills learned in previous acting courses. Besides character work, these upper level acting students will also focus on in-depth scene analysis, critical reviewing, and even beginning directing. The reading and reviewing of dramatic literature is also a requirement for this class. Students must have taken Acting before taking this class.

TECHNICAL THEATRE I/GRADES 10-12: 0.5 CREDIT (459241)

Stagecraft is a one-semester class designed to expose the students to all aspects of play production. Students develop a basic working knowledge of various aspects of technical theatre and apply those skills to both classroom and production projects. By helping in the construction of the set pieces ad props that will be used in school productions students are taught hands-on about the basics of stagecraft. The functions and use of lighting and sound instruments as well as basic design will be introduced through this class. Students will also be required to learn and implement theatre safety practices as defined by national standards and guidelines.

TECHNICAL THEATRE II/GRADES 11-12: 1 CREDIT (459250)

Advanced Stagecraft is for students who have already taken a Stagecraft course and are interested in continuing their learning in technical theatre. Students will expand their knowledge and exploration into the design and construction process as it applies to theatrical productions. Students will also be given opportunities to further develop their knowledge and skills as they relate to the programming and running of lighting and sound elements. Students must have taken Stagecraft before taking this class.

MUSICAL THEATRE PRODUCTION/GRADES 10-12: 1 CREDIT (45910M)

Musical Theatre Production is a yearlong drama class for students who are a part of the musical and other performances put on by the theatre department. Students will develop skills in role analysis, character development, vocal techniques, and communication of text. This course is also for those interested in playing a leadership role in a play or musical (Stage Manager, Student Assistant Director, Publicist, etc.) as well as those interested in dancing in the productions. Students are selected through audition or director approval.

MUSIC COURSES

BAND: 1 CREDIT

GRADE 9 (451000), GRADE 10 (451040), GRADE 11 (451050), GRADE 12 (451060)

Band participates year-round in many school and civic activities. Band is rewarding in terms of fellowship, personal gratification through performance, and healthful functions. The Airedale Band has high standards of excellence which have been developed by hard work and tradition. The high school band is a performance-oriented band. Students must have been in Band the previous year or have director approval to join the class.

JAZZ BAND: 1 CREDIT (451200)

Jazz Band provides students with the opportunity to explore a wide repertoire of popular music ranging from different forms of jazz to rock n’ roll and contemporary hits. This ensemble includes alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, trumpets, trombones, piano, guitar, bass, drum set, and auxiliary percussion. Other aspects of this course include participation in local concerts, regional festivals, region jazz band auditions, and community activities. Students must also be enrolled in first period Band or have approval of the director to join the class.

CONCERT CHOIR: 1 CREDIT (452000)

Concert Choir is a multi-grade course that provides opportunities for students to develop their musical potential and aesthetic understanding of music through singing in a choral ensemble. Members will perform a variety of musical styles ranging from classical to pop and rock. Students will gain skills in music reading and sight-singing while learning proper vocal technique for the choir setting. Students are required to participate in all concerts.

9TH GRADE ADVANCED CHOIR: 1 CREDIT (452009)

9 th Grade Advanced Choir is made up of students who are selected by directors for this class to represent Alma High School in choral competitions. Students will further develop their vocal skill in this course. Students in Advanced Choir are selected by instructors

ADVANCED VOCAL MUSIC: 1 CREDIT (452070)

Advanced Vocal Music is an advanced choir and students are selected for this class to represent Alma High School in choral competitions. Students will further develop their vocal skill in this course. Students are selected by audition.

CHAMBER CHOIR: 1 CREDIT (45207C)

Chamber Choir is an advanced choir. Students are selected for this class to represent Alma High School in choral competitions. Students will further develop their vocal skill in this course. Students are selected by audition.

MUSIC THEORY/GRADES 11-12: 1 CREDIT (459010)

Music Theory is an advanced course designed to expand and enhance the skills of the serious high school musician. Students examine components of music composition, melodic practices, theories of harmony, and other musical concepts as well as develop notation, aural, and sight-reading skills. Emphasis is placed on the application of rhythm, melody, harmony, form, and other compositional devices into original compositions. Students must be co-enrolled in Band or Choir or have instructor approval to take this course.

VISUAL ART COURSES

VISUAL ART APPRECIATION/GRADES 9-12: 0.5 CREDIT (453100)

Visual Art Appreciation is a semester course designed to develop awareness of the visual arts. Topics include elements of art, principles of design, art processes, and materials creating visual art.

ART I/GRADES 10-12: 1 CREDIT (451000)

Art I is a yearlong course in which students will create visual artwork through various modes and methods. Students do not have to have previously taken an art class to be in this course.

ART II/GRADES 11-12: 1 CREDIT (450030)

Art II is a yearlong course in which students will extend their understanding and continue to develop their skills in creating visual artwork. Students must have already taken Art I in order to take this course.

AP STUDIO ART DRAWING PORTFOLIO/GRADES 11-12: 1 CREDIT (559040)

AP Studio Art Drawing Portfolio presents an inquiry-based approach to learning about and making art and design. Students are expected to conduct an in-depth, sustained investigation of materials, processes, and ideas. The framework focuses on concepts and skills emphasized within college art and design foundations courses with the same intent: to help students become inquisitive, thoughtful artists and designers able to articulate information about their work. AP Art and Design students develop and apply skills of inquiry and investigation, practice, experimentation, revision, communication, and reflection. Students must have already taken Art I and Art II in order to take this course or have instructor approval.
