Alma School District Safe Rooms

Alma School District is proud to provide four FEMA-compliant Safe Rooms for use during severe weather events. These facilities were made possible through a combination of federal and state funding and are available to protect our students, staff, and community.

Together, these Safe Rooms can shelter up to 5,000 people, offering peace of mind and security during tornado warnings.

When Safe Rooms Are Open

  • Only during a Tornado Warning or when Tornado Sirens are activated

  • Closed immediately after the warning is lifted

Note: Safe Rooms are not open during a Tornado Watch

During School Hours

  • Students and staff have first priority

  • Community members may enter after all students and staff are safely inside

Safe Room Rules & Procedures

Please follow these rules to ensure the safety and comfort of everyone:

  • Doors unlock automatically when tornado sirens sound

  • Follow instructions from Safe Room managers or school administrators at all times

  • Pets must be in airline-approved carries and under owner control

  • No food, drink, or tobacco products allowed

  • Music/radios allowed only with personal earphones

Daily Use

Outside of emergency situations, the Safe Rooms also serve as:

  • Indoor space for PE and athletic programs

  • Large-group instructional areas for academic activities

Familiarize yourself with your closest Safe Room and its procedures. Being ready and informed can make all the difference during an emergency.
