Crump, Schlegel qualify for 5A state track meet

Alma Schools 

John Crump and Sam Schlegel clinched a berth at next week’s 5A state track meet. 

Crump was second (15.10) in the 110 high hurdles at the 5A-West conference meet. 

Schlegel was third (41.6) in the 300 intermediate hurdles.

Alma freshman Josie Welborn took first (5-2) in the high jump and with that, qualified for the state meet. Welborn was sixth in the triple jump. 

Alma’s Kenadie Farris was seventh in the high jump, and Olivia Whipple placed eighth in the long jump. 

Alma’s Jackson Mitchell earned a berth at the state meet by taking third (136-1) in the discus. Demetrius Humphrey was sixth in the discus. 

Mitchell and Weston McCall placed fifth and sixth in the shot put. 

Nevaeh Kangas qualified for the state meet with a fourth-place finish (5:51.43) in the 1600. Kangas was sixth in the 3200 meters. 

Alma’s Ayden Parker finished fifth in the 800. He, Schlegel, Crump, and Caleb Liles were fifth in the 800 and 1600 relay events. 

Farris, Kangas, Whipple, and Vivian Beneux finished sixth in the 800 relay. 

Zoye Wofford was sixth in the 400. 

Soccer 

Alma and Dardanelle battled to a 4-4 draw Monday in non-conference soccer action. 

Elliot Resinos scored twice and assisted on another goal for the Airedales (4-5-5). 

Four players, Lukas Wald (8), Hamir Thibodeaux (8), Seth Canales (7), and Resinos (7), have combined for 30 of the team’s school-record 44 goals this season. 

Dardanelle dropped to 12-3-5. 

Wald put the Airedales on the board in the 35th minute on a penalty kick. Resinos scored the next two goals in the 51st and 62nd minute, with Oscar Ventura assisting on the second one. 

Thibodeaux, with an assist from Resinos, scored in the 68th minute to account for Alma’s final tally. 

Baseball 

Michael Taylor drove in three runs with a double and tie-breaking single to lift the Airedales to a 5-3 win over Mountain Home Monday. 

The Airedales’ 13th victory of the season matches the team’s most regular season wins since 2016 (13-15). 

Logan English earned the victory in relief, his fifth win of the season. 

Taylor’s two-run double gave the Airedales an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning. The Bombers cut the lead in half in their half of the first, and went ahead, 3-2, in the fourth. 

Camden Curd’s sacrifice fly tied the game in the sixth, and Taylor’s one-out RBI single to deep short made it 4-3. English scored on a throwing error in the seventh to account for the final run. 

The Airedales travel to Little Rock Mills Wednesday. 

Softball 

The Alma Lady Airedales’ softball team dropped a 15-5 decision to the Fort Smith Northside Lady Bears on Monday. 

Harper Jernigan was the losing pitcher. She also drove in two runs with one of the team’s five hits. 

Cali Frazier had two hits for the Lady Airedales. 

The Lady Bears led just 6-5 entering the bottom of the fourth before scoring seven times.
