John Crump started spring football practice as one of the candidates to replace the graduating Michael Taylor at quarterback. Turns out, Crump is pretty good at the hurdles, too.

The Alma junior won the 110 high hurdles this week at the 5A state track meet in Vilonia with a time of 15.02.

Crump is Alma’s first 110 high hurdles state champion since Daren Simmons won state in both the 110 and 300 hurdles in 1993.

Crump edged Russellville’s Kercher Herring (15.06). Ironically, Crump was second (15.10) to Herring at the April 28 5A-West conference meet.

Freshman Josie Welborn, who won the high jump (5-2) at the 5A-West meet in Farmington, failed to place at the state meet (ninth) with a jump of 4-10.

How good was the 1600 meters? Alma junior Nevaeh Kangas didn’t place (10th overall) but broke a 46-year-old school record with a time of  5:41.91, breaking Melanie Gibson’s mark of 5:42.8 set in 1979.
