Lady Airedales drop tough five-set decision to Apaches

The Alma Lady Airedales dropped a 22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17, 16-14 decision to the Pottsville Lady Apaches in nonconference action at Crabtree Gym.
Alma (1-2) took a 2-1 lead following Chloe Gregory’s ace to cap a 25-23 win in the third set. They fell behind by 10 (16-6) before closing to within five (22-17) in the fourth set.
In the fifth and deciding game, the Lady Airedales trailed 13-8 before rallying to tie the match at 14-14 on Gregory’s kill.
“If we can count it as a lesson and not a loss, it will serve us throughout the season,” Alma coach Kimberly Weaver said. “These girls, they work so hard. I believe there is something that we’ll take out of this loss that’s going to make us better down the stretch.”
Maggie Brogan had a season-high 14 kills to pace the Lady Airedales. Freshman Ryleigh Floyd added a career-high 47 assists.
Also for Alma, Gregory had nine kills, and Breella Hughes and Ah Lea Henson had seven kills, and Josie Welborn had six kills.
Alma travels to Mena on Tuesday and returns home Sept. 6 to host the Lady Airedale Invitational.
Football
The Alma Airedales’ eighth-grade football team defeated Morrilton Thursday night, 12-0, for their first victory of the season.
Jenson Cahoon ran for 43 yards and a touchdown to pace the winners. Lucas Daniels also added a touchdown for the winners.
Defensively, Braxton Price had four solo tackles, four assisted tackles, and a TFL (tackle for loss). Blaze Dorsey had two TFLs, and Bryson Taylor and Jayson Garcia had five stops apiece, with Garcia adding an interception and a pass breakup.
Easton DeLude had four tackles, including a quarterback sack. DeLude also had one reception for 10 yards.
