Alma golfers battling for spot at state tournament

Harrison won the 5A-West conference preview with a 20-stroke win over runner-up Alma this week at Eagle Crest Golf Course. The top three teams in each conference advance to state.
Harrison Isaac Freeman shot a 2-under 69 to earn medalist honors.
Alma sophomore Jack Taylor fired a 75 to lead the Airedales. Grady Farmer and Chase Wood both shot 77 for the Airedales, followed by Parker Moreland with an 81 and Carson Curd with an 82.
Van Buren and Greenwood finished four strokes behind the Airedales.
Volleyball
The Lady Airedales dropped a four-set decision to Clarksville Thursday, dropping the team to 1-4.
Alma played without two key starters, including Maggie Brogan and Josie Welborn.
Sophomore Olivia Hughes led the Lady Airedales with 13 kills. Junior Jaeda Cahoon added nine kills and six aces. Junior Bailee Oliver had 32 digs, and freshman Ryleigh Floyd dished out 34 assists.
The Lady Airedales open 5A-West play on Tuesday at Farmington.
Tennis
Alma’s Landon Wilson continued his torrid start to the fall by claiming a 6-3, 6-1 singles victory against Greenwood.
Alma’s Lacey Haughton and Piper Powell battled to a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 doubles win.
Ariel Oliver and Juliet Hargis, with Maleayah Bailey subbing in for the second half, earned a 6-3 victory.
Cross Country
The Alma Lady Airedales’ girls’ cross country team finished sixth at the Take Flight ‘Night’ 5K at Northwest Arkansas Community College this week.
Alma senior Nevaeh Kangas placed fourth (20:29.90).
This Day In Airedales History
Sept. 6, 1985: Marvin Ball scooped up Brian Hill’s blocked punt and raced 33 yards for a touchdown with 28 seconds left in the first, and Phillip Mullins’ 41-yard kickoff return led to Joe Lloyd’s 20-yard field goal as Alma shut out Bentonville, 23-0, in the 1985 opener. Tim Lumpkin added a 3-yard TD pass to Doug Daniel.
