Alma High School Cheer and Dance recently returned from an unforgettable experience at Nationals in Orlando, Florida, where both programs delivered outstanding performances on a national stage and brought home historic achievements.
Alma Dance competed at UDA Nationals, the largest dance competition in the country. Head Coach Murray praised the team for their professionalism and teamwork under intense pressure. For the first time in school history, Alma Dance advanced to Finals in both Pom and Hip Hop—an incredible milestone for the program. Competing against elite programs, including private schools with extensive national title histories, the team finished 7th in Hip Hop and 5th in Pom.
Coach Murray shared that the team’s ability to work together both on and off the floor allowed them to fully showcase their talent. She expressed pride in the dancers for representing Alma and the community so well and gratitude for the district’s continued support of opportunities that allow students to compete at the highest level.
Alma Varsity Cheer also had a successful national showing, returning home with Bronze medals. Coach Law commended the team’s energy and performance and expressed appreciation for the tremendous support from parents, family members, and fellow cheer and dance teams throughout the weekend, noting that the encouragement meant a great deal to the athletes.
In addition to the teams’ accomplishments, Alma High School Principal Mr. Kirkendoll was honored with the Innovator of Spirit Award by Varsity Spirit. This prestigious recognition celebrates exceptional creativity, leadership, and innovation in school spirit programming. The award honors educators who demonstrate visionary thinking and a strong commitment to building positive, engaging, and inclusive school spirit cultures.
Mr. Kirkendoll received the award on January 31, 2026, during the Beacon Awards at the DII National School Spirit Championships, held alongside the National High School Cheerleading Championship, National Dance Team Championship, and National School Band Championship. While he expressed gratitude for the recognition and for those who made the nomination possible, Mr. Kirkendoll shared that he was most proud to see Alma recognized on a national stage.
These achievements reflect the commitment, excellence, and school spirit that continue to define Alma on both the state and national levels.
